Our Team

The Richmond Public Defender’s Office is the largest in the state of Virginia. We are appointed by the Court to represent people who cannot afford to hire their own lawyer. Attorneys, investigators, mitigation specialists, paralegals and legal assistants all work together as a team to provide zealous, client centered representation to our clients. We are a community of committed, inspired lawyers who litigate aggressively and advocate for our clients at every opportunity. We understand the importance of giving our clients respect and compassion during the most trying time of their lives. We believe that every person is more than the worst thing they’ve ever done. We are a partner office with Gideon’s Promise, working to bring together different areas of expertise to find creative solutions and defenses for our clients. Whether a client decides to fight their case or seek an alternative resolution, our team stands behind them, making sure their stories are heard.

An arrest and criminal charge alone can have a devastating impact on a person’s life, forcing them to suffer dramatic consequences as a result of their arrest alone. This collateral damage, and the instability that results, can be far more devastating than any of the direct penalties that accompany the criminal conviction. We understand and address the struggles that lead to justice involvement. We do more than ask about the circumstance of our clients’ cases — we spend time getting to know our clients as individuals. Our attorneys and mitigation specialists learn about the challenges that clients face and help them tackle the issues that stand in the way of the futures they seek.
